What is an explosive atmosphere?

It is a mixture with air, in atmospheric conditions, of flammable substances in the form of gases, vapors, mists or powders, in which, after ignition, the combustion propagates to the unburned mixture.

The term is not applicable when the risk of explosion comes from unstable substances, such as explosives and pyrotechnic substances, or when the explosive mixture is outside of what is understood as conditions
normal atmospheres, so it excludes processes under hyperbaric conditions.

In order for an explosion to occur, the explosive atmosphere and an ignition source must coincide. This requires the existence of a combustible substance (gas, vapor, mist or dust), and an oxidant (air) in a range of
determined concentration, and at the same time the presence of an energy source capable of initiating the reaction.

In a location with an explosive atmosphere, two different aspects must be taken into account:

  • The equipment that will be installed in this area and that must be safe and not susceptible to start an explosion.
  • The way in which you work in this dangerous area.

Directive 2014/34 / EU on Atex products

The European Commission (EC) has a public guide to facilitate the application of Directive 2014/34 / EU that regulates the commercialization of Atex products. The European Commission (EC) published in April 2016 the application guide for the
new Directive 2014/34 / EU on the harmonization of the laws of the member states in the field of protection devices and systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Our guides:

WHAT IS HAZARDOUS AREA?

Mixing of air and flammable gases, vapors, fog or dust under atmospheric conditions , once ignited, allows the combustion process to propagate.

  • Classification of the zones.
  • Types of protection for different atmospheres.
  • Identification of Atex labels.
